He began his career with Modern Studios and Raman Productions before beginning writing and directing. He worked as the operative cameraman on three Hindi films: Patang, Phool Bane Angaray and Juaari. Working independently, Ahluwalia wrote and directed over a dozen popular Punjwood films.
