The plot is based on the short story Pasher Bari by Arun Chowdhury. The film was a remake of 1953 Telugu film Pakkinti Ammayi. Successive remakes of the film include Padosan (1969, Hindi), Pakkinti Ammayi (1981, Telugu) and Pakkadmane Hudugi (Kannada).
