Afro-Guyanese people are the inhabitants of Guyana of Sub-Saharan African descent (formerly, as the Afro-Guianese they were the inhabitants forcibly brought as slaves to work on the sugar plantations of British Guiana). After abolition of slavery in The British Colonies, Afro-Guyanese came together to develop small villages. They were not given land to compensate for their labor as future immigrant groups received, seeding the beginning of ethnic tension.
