Frank Raleigh Lautenberg (/ˈlɔːtənbɜrɡ/; January 23, 1924 – June 3, 2013) was a United States Senator from New Jersey and a member of the Democratic Party. Originally from Paterson, he first served in the United States Senate from 1982 to 2001; after a brief retirement, he was asked by his party to run again after Robert Torricelli dropped out of the 2002 Senate race due to a scandal.
