The Javan elephant (Elephas maximus sondaicus) was a critically endangered subspecies of the Asian elephant native to the island of Java with the last surviving members found on the island of Borneo after they were introduced there, saving the subspecies from extinction. It is often considered a synonym of Elephas maximus sumatranus, the Sumatran elephant.
