Lutjegast (Dutch: [ˈlʏcəˌɣɑst]) is a village in the Westerkwartier area of Groningen in the Netherlands. It is administered as part of the municipality Grootegast.The name Lutjegast originates from Gronings, a dialect of Low German, in which lutje means small or little and a ga(a)st is a higher, sandy ridge in an otherwise swampy area.Lutjegast was the birthplace of the explorer Abel Tasman.
