Manzanar (Spanish for "apple orchard"; formerly, Manzanar Gate and Francis) was a town in Inyo County, California found by Canadian-American water engineer George Chaffey.It is located on the former Narrow gauge railway line of the Southern Pacific Railroad 9 miles (14 km) north of Lone Pine, at an elevation of 3,727 feet (1,136.0 m).A post office operated at Manzanar from 1911 to 1914.
