Margaret Lee Workman, a Democrat, is chief justice of the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia. She was appointed a circuit judge in Kanawha County, West Virginia to fill a vacancy in 1983 and subsequently elected. She was elected to the Supreme Court in 1988 for a 12-year term, expiring in 2000, the first woman elected to this position.
