Monroe is an unincorporated community in Amherst County, Virginia, United States. Monroe is located along U.S. Route 29 6.1 miles (9.8 km) north of Lynchburg.The town was referenced in the ballad "Wreck of the Old 97" (They gave him his orders at Monroe, Virginia/Saying, "Steve, you're way behind time").Speed the Plough was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.
