Plagiodontia is a genus of rodent in the family Capromyidae. The name Plagiodontia means "oblique tooth" in Greek.This genus contains the following four species (three of them extinct): Hispaniolan hutia (Plagiodontia aedium) F. Cuvier, 1836† San Rafael hutia or wide-toothed hutia (Plagiodontia araeum) Ray, 1964† Samana hutia (Plagiodontia ipnaeum) Johnson, 1948† Plagiodontia spelaeum
