After the 1997 law of decentralization and regionalization organizing the territory into 16 regions, Morocco initiated a new program in 2010 aimed at giving a greater autonomy to its regions, especially those in the Western Sahara. Since 2015 Morocco officially administers 12 regions, including the disputed territory of Western Sahara.The region is the current highest administrative division of Morocco.
