The Revolution of 1851 was an attempt to overthrow the conservative government by Chilean liberals. Successful anti-government uprisings in September 1851 in various cities except the capital Santiago left the country divided and a civil war developed. After battles and sieges by late December 1851 government forces had subdued the revolutionaries.
