Bengal was a province of the Mughal Empire between the 16th and 18th centuries. On 25 September 1574 Munim Khan, the commander of the Mughal army occupied Tanda, the capital of the last Afghan ruler of Bengal Daud Khan Karrani. It ushered in the Mughal rule in Bengal. In 1713 Murshid Quli Khan became the naib nazim (deputy subahdar) of Bengal. In 1717, he became its subahdar or nazim (governor) and Bengal became completely independent of imperial control.
