Sir Jocelyn Field Thorpe FRS (1 December 1872 – 10 June 1940) was an English chemist who discovered the Thorpe reaction and the Thorpe-Ingold effect.Born in London on 1 December 1872, one of nine children and the sixth son, of Mr. and Mrs. W.G. Thorpe of the Middle Temple. He attended Worthing College, King's College, London, and the Royal College of Science. He earned his Ph.D in organic chemistry under Victor Meyer at Heidelberg.
