Padang (Indonesian pronunciation: [ˈpadaŋ]) is the capital of the West Sumatra province in Indonesia. It is the largest city in the western coast of Sumatra. Before Indonesia's independence, Padang was one of the major cities in the Dutch East Indies and the second largest city in Sumatra behind Palembang. It has an area of 694.96 square kilometres (268.33 sq mi) and a population of 1,024,906 people at the 2014 estimated. Padang is one of the cleanest big cities in Indonesia.
