He received a bachelor's degree from Washington State College of Fine Arts in 1936, entered the military on June 23, 1936 at Fort Lewis, Washington and graduated from advanced flying school at Kelly Field, Texas on June 9, 1937.In July 1943, Greening was shot down over Italy.
