Essential thrombocythaemia (ET; also known as essential thrombocytosis, essential thrombocythemia, primary thrombocytosis) is a rare chronic blood disorder characterised by the overproduction of platelets by megakaryocytes in the bone marrow. It may, albeit rarely, develop into acute myeloid leukaemia or myelofibrosis.
