The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina is a state recognized tribe of approximately 55,000 enrolled members, most of them living in Robeson and the adjacent counties in southeastern North Carolina. The Lumbee Tribe is the largest tribe in North Carolina and the ninth-largest organized tribe in the nation that have not received federal recognition. Additionally, the Lumbee are also the largest tribe living east of the Mississippi River who have not been recognized by the U.S. federal government.
