He is known for his roles as Archie Bunker's business partner Murray Klein in the sitcom Archie Bunker's Place from 1979-1982, as Arnold Burns in A Thousand Clowns (for which he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor) and as private investigator Milton Arbogast in Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho.
