It was built in 1889 by the Monroe Water Works and originally contained a 100,000 gallon wooden water tank that was replaced in 1914 by the current 125,000 gallon steel one built by the Des Moines Bridge and Iron Company. The tower was taken out of service in 1993. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.
