Perley Gilman Nutting (1873–1949) was the founder of the Optical Society of America (OSA) and served as its first president from 1916-1917. OSA is now known as the Optical Society.A graduate of Stanford University (B.A. 1897), the University of California, Berkeley (M.A. 1899) and Cornell University (Ph.D. 1903), Nutting joined the U.S. Bureau of Standards as a physicist in 1903.
