Thomas Jonathan Coffin Amory was an officer in the Regular Army of the United States prior to and during the Civil War. After graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1851, he served in the American West and was involved in the Utah War. Soon after the outbreak of the Civil War, he assumed command of the 17th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry as colonel. He died of yellow fever in New Bern, North Carolina on October 7, 1864.
