The village \"urban area\" consists of the settlements of Ytre \u00C5lvik og Indre \u00C5lvik (outer and inner \u00C5lvik) and Vikadal. The settlements are located on either side of a ridge with Vikadal in between. Indre \u00C5lvik has been heavily industrialised since the early 1900s, when Bj\u00F8lvefossen A/S was established.
