During a ten-year period from 1997 to 2007, he served as chairman of the Liberal People's Party (Swedish: Folkpartiet liberalerna).He announced on 11 June 2009 that he would be leaving the Cabinet of Fredrik Reinfeldt as soon as a successor was appointed.
