He was the son of mathematician Joseph Louis Fran\u00E7ois Bertrand (1822\u20131900), and son-in-law to physicist \u00C9leuth\u00E8re Mascart (1837-1908).He was a student at the \u00C9cole Polytechnique, and beginning in 1869 he attended the Ecole des Mines de Paris.
