It tells the story of the hero Sinxay (\u0EAA\u0EB4\u0E99\u0EC4\u0E8A) who goes on a quest to rescue his aunt Soumountha (\u0EAA\u0EB9\u0EA1\u0EB8\u0E99\u0E97\u0EB2) who was abducted by the demon Nyak Koumphan (\u0E8D\u0EB1\u0E81\u0E81\u0EB9\u0EA1\u0E9E\u0EB1\u0E99). The poem is believed to have been written sometime between the mid-16th and the end of the 17th century in the Lao kingdom of Lan Xang.
