When sauerkraut is used instead, the soup is called sour shchi, while soups based on sorrel, spinach, nettle, and similar plants are called green shchi (Russian: \u0437\u0435\u043B\u0451\u043D\u044B\u0435 \u0449\u0438, zelyoniye shchi).
